I was hesitant to read this one as I am not a big animal lover, but since I heard good things about it I took a chance. I am glad I did because this book is so much more than just a boy and his pet fox. The character development of Peter and the woman he meets during his journey is fantastic. Also, the author does a nice job of letting you see in the mind of Pax and the other fox (foxes?) he meetsa long the way on his journey without making it seem silly. It was so well done and so sweet. Any kids who love animals would love this one, and it would work well as a class read or a read-aloud for any middle grade kids (I am going to read it to my boys this summer). The complex themes would work well for grades 3 and up, I think, but younger kids who are strong readers would enjoy the book, too.
